you see, this is what i feel: 2.

********
funny, ain't it:
once you're on the other side of what you were feeling,
it all becomes quite evident.
1 + 1 = 2
so to speak.

if you were to say
1 + ? = ?
then you wouldn't really know the outcome.

so:
here i am.
on the other side of yesterday.

i awoke yesterday feeling:
something is awry in the universe.
something is not quite right.
something is going to happen.
something is shifting.

so here's what i now know:
my intuition told me my sister was struggling.
and she was:
she let me know last evening.
it's time to sell off our mother's collections.

why is it so difficult to part with belongings?
why does it feel like the loved one
dies a second time around....

then i went to work
and
stood by a friend as she died....
my hand on her chest....
watching her slowly breathe her way out of this world.
telling her
"i will not leave you."

i stood that way for 30 minutes.

i spent the better part of the night
comforting others.

and:
now i want to crash and burn.
now i want to empty out and cry.

as i drove home this morning:
in the cold.
in the rising sunlight.
in the quiet.
just as my jeep turned over 16,000 miles:
two tiny twin moose
crossed the highway in front of the jeep.
i sat there in awe.
breathing.
realizing:
i have all i need.
right here.
right now.

it saddens me to think
others will own all those pieces of who my mother was.
others will own things i grew up holding and cherishing.

but i have all i need:
alaska.
the pencilfox family.
my vast collections.
my friends.

i have love.

i am soul....

make sure to keep one thing or two...I have my dad's watch, a handkerchief, signature seal, his handwriting...it takes no space at all, and it is lovely! Glad you are well after the evening where you gave of yourself so generously and you know you will be remembered for that lovingly xxx

This is beautiful.

And I agree with MLJ -- keep a few special things just for you. :) xx
i was SO hoping that you would be able to slowly ease your way back into work . . . sounds like it was tougher than you could ever have expected!

i know that there is much love living within the memories of time spent with your mother's things, but in the end, they are just things. hold tight to the memories, to the love you felt back then, and even tighter to the enormous love you have with your wee precious family now!!!

i've been thinking about you at night ~ giving of yourself, caring for others, while the rest of us sleep. i am always sending&love strength your way!!!

thank you for love and strength!
we can ALL use those!
as a sometimes end-of-life doula, your words resonate deeply with me. yes, when you've helped someone die well, things seem frivolous and, well, unnecessary. but promise that you will do as the others people here have asked: find one or three things - they can be little - that you remember your mother using, and keep those. use them every chance you get. and yes, absolutely, try your best to get something that bears her handwriting. one day i will tell you a story . . .

yes! i have a new title! an end-of-life doula!!

i kept a couple cards my mother wrote to me.
one is a valentine she sent [with the help of a caregiver where she was living] and although her handwriting was not the perfect schoolgirl cursive, it was HER handwriting.

please: tell me stories. please.
