a most excellent adventure.

saguaro cactus.
barbed wire fences.
high hot sun.

the quaint little town of williams.
rescued and whispered-into-fullness shire horse "big mike".
cattle dog "bandit" barking his ever-lovin' heart out....

graffiti-bombing our waiter raymond at breakfast.
handing him my drawing, telling him
you are a beautiful soul.

walking for miles and miles and becoming body-weary, soul-weary....
crying in pain.
waking to deer at our front door.

walking more.
logging miles.
seeing so much red dirt and limestone for miles and miles.

quiet-time at hermit's rest, an elk lying undisturbed, just below where we stood.
the turquoise blue of the colorado river, winding its way through the canyon.
two of my favourite colours together.

the thunderbird and all the architecture of mary colter.
sun turning to rain and back to sun again.
waiting for the train, chatting with a new zealander.

wearing a vine and heart on my hand every day of the trip.
a reminder to be kind to myself.
a most excellent adventure, this was....

it's a good life....

Wow. It sounds revitalizing and nourishing for the soul.
Did you bring any red dirt back on the bottom of your shoes?
That land is so different than the hinterland. Doesn't it make you appreciate this world we get to explore and the place we choose to hang our hat?
I think Big Mike is one lucky beast. I love that old chair with painted flowers and the Thunderbird.
Glad you're home safe n' sound, Bernard.

An excellent adventure indeed! I see the wonders and mysteries of the canyon country have stolen your heart....the same thing happened to me so many years ago. There's a wildness in the canyons that speaks to the soul. I'm so glad you heard it.

i felt that, too. the presence of those who lived on the land and did not overtake it or claim it, the living simply and with respect....

it sounds like a wonderful mix of exertion, reflection, and peacefully being present.
