december blog-o-sphere think tank: the best gift.
********
you know.
it's funny how the story can change with a shift in one's perspective.
much like the quote from marcel proust:
"the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes
but in having new eyes."
i was going to write about that little diamond solitaire ring being the best gift ever,
so here's the backstory:
mister pencilfox and i were joined in marriage
in november of 1997.
our ceremony was quite simple, i purchased a purple dress and blue thermal shirt
to wear underneath it, and mister pencilfox dressed simply in casual clothes and a tie.
my witness and i carried bundles of stargazer lilies from the local grocery.
mister pencilfox and i were quite polar opposites in our backgrounds:
i was raised with "old money"
and his best friend was second-generation pawn shop owner in anchorage.
mister pencilfox's best friend and i became fast friends:
bobby wore braids to his waist, and rode a motorcycle, owned a vintage truck.
shortly after mister pencilfox and i said "i do,"
his father passed away.
we stopped to see bobby on the way to dropping mister pencilfox at the airport.
he told bobby that he did not have an opportunity to buy me a gift,
so he wanted to pick up something from the pawn shop.
mister pencilfox picked a tiny diamond ring, and bobby approved of his purchase.
dear sweet bobby passed away a couple years later, a young man with cancer.
mister pencilfox and i still miss him terribly.
even though the ring was just about the best gift ever,
and it came at "christmastime",
the first image above shows the best gift i ever really received:
mister pencilfox.
i was a single woman, living without water and electricity,
raising and running sled dogs.
so many men wanted to court me.
but those who know me best will understand this:
my dogs meant more to me than the prospect of finding a man.
i would tell those who asked:
do not ever come out to my dog lot without an invitation.
not ever.
never.
i told this to mister pencilfox
but i would wake from daysleep to find him out in the dog lot,
rolling on the ground, loving on the dogs, playing with them as a child would
so trustingly do, putting his sunglasses on the dogs, taking their photos,
laughing hard.
i knew this was the man for me.
so.
diamond ring?
great gift.
seeing the landscape with new eyes?
mister pencilfox was and still remains the best gift ever.
