no more mice. no more bears.

********

sunday night a very dear friend breathed his last breaths,
left behind his earthly shell, gave up his spirit to his maker.

he was a gentle soul.

every night we would hold hands and talk of the day.
we would share stories of bears tracks around the sawmill,
of mice running in the woodlands, and of the weather.

his view was limited by the restraints and limitations placed on him by his failing body.
every night, i would bring the world to him.

as we parted, he said to me:
no more mice.
no more bears.

people declare to me
"that must be a very difficult job to do, to work with the old and infirmed
and the dying."

i never think of my job as a difficult thing.
it's my job to nurse the elderly.
it's my calling to minister to the soul and spirit of these folks who can no longer walk,
who cannot shift their body position,
who cannot walk to the fridge for a glass of ice water,
who cannot lift a fork to their mouths for their sustenance.

i am blessed.
life is good.

********

simply, the thing i am shall make me live.

Marie, this is so beautiful...I have always felt a connection to the elderly, and in my massage work I always treasure my time with these older clients. One of my very first clients out of school was an woman named Louise, she lived in the retirement community in the building adjacent to the spa I worked in and her daughter, (who lived out of town) would pay for her to come in once a week for a massage. I would go over and get her from the lobby, wheel her in to the spa and get her settled in the treatment room, and we would have the most wonderful talks while I was massaging her. I remember so many details about her, down to the hand knit sweaters she wore, and stories of her husband...I don't know why I'm telling you all this, it just popped up in my head as I read your post. To this day, ten years later, I think of Louise on a regular basis, and even now I'm tearing up writing about her...There is something so wonderful about spending time with our elders, and offering a helping hand. He was lucky to have you by his side, thanks for sharing this, and bringing back all these heartfelt memories :) I always smile when I think abou Louise!

a weight that isn't to heavy, but lets you know it's there.

and have felt like the hands of grace have touched my temple..
