as a young girl, my favourite christmas gift was a humble offering from
our great-aunt grace.
she lived alone in the projects in cairo, illinois.
she would hand to us paper sacks, partially filled with apples and oranges,
the worn brown paper rolled at the top for us to easily grab on to.
she never made an apology for such a modest little gift.
a sack of gold and riches could not compare to this kind and gentle gesture.

last night as i was driving to work, i was singing carols,
feeling the bittersweetness of having to yet-again work during the holiday season.
somewhere in the middle of
silent night, holy night,
i heard my mother singing with me.
not for long, but just long enough that i recognized her voice.

*

the earth is shifting, and the light of the season is with us.
may all my friends feel the magic at this special time of year.

may you hear the angels sing.

you bring tears to my eyes. your mother singing with you, the bag of apples and oranges. the simplest things are the things that fill our hearts with that very special light. I wish all the light in the world for you, dear friend. you are a true angel yourself. xoxo

What a warm feeling, a smile and then a sigh, when I read about the worn brown bag rolled down. Grace. She knew what was going on, what was important. Did you delight in her gift? I get oranges and grapefruits from my parents for Christmas. (In a brown box) ;)
It's such a time of looking back, of reminisce right now, isn't it Bernard?
I bet you sing really good. ...all is calm, all is bright...

How beautiful, it really is something special and full of pure love when you are sharing a moment with a beloved one who is not in a physical form.

Have a wonderful time!

My mom also remembers such gifts fondly; oranges, apples, nuts. It's enough. You know you are loved and held and thought of, and it's enough.
Magic is thick right now, I'm glad to hear you feel it, too.
Love to you, friend.
